Summer 2016 Preview: The Comedies

It’s that time of the year again: it’s Summer Movie Season!  All the big budget entertainment you’ve been waiting for all year is coming in full speed.  Through out the week, I am going to break down the movies coming out this summer in different categories and genres and listing the ones I am most excited to see.  I am first going to look at the comedies coming out this summer.  Who doesn’t like having a good laugh at the movies?  Well these are five movies that I think will give you the biggest laughs this summer.

5 – Central Intelligence (Rawson Marshall Thurber, June 17)

I was torn putting this on the list because it stars Kevin Hart and his schtick is getting really old and he’s not as funny as he used to be.  But in Central Intelligence, Hart is playing the more conservative character and his co-star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson looks to be more of the wild card with bigger comedic moments which I approve of.  I love The Rock and when Hart is on, he’s on.  The trailer looks extremely entertaining and any time you can see The Rock’s face simulated on a fat body singing En Vogue’s My Lovin’ in a shower, you know you’re in for something rowdy.

4 – Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (Akiva Schaffer & Jorma Taccone, June 3)

Hot Rod (2005) is somewhat of a cult classic and one of the weirdest and funniest comedies I’ve seen this millennium.  The same team is back for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, a mockumentary about a pop/rap star Conner4Real (Andy Sandberg) who’s life goes into a tailspin when his album fails to sell and he does anything to get back to the top.  The cast is filled with great comedic talent, like Sandberg, Bill Hader, Will Forte, Will Arnett, Sarah Silverman, Maya Rudolph, and fellow Lonely Island member Jorma Taccone.  This could be one of the summer’s biggest surprises.

3 – Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (Nick Stoller, May 20)

The first Neighbors (2014) was a smash hit and one that I enjoyed for the most part, but felt it got a little redundant towards the end.  Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising looks kind of like a rehash of the first, but bigger and crazier.  The plot is the exact same except for instead of a fraternity, a hard partying sorority led by Shelby (Chloe Grace Moretz) moves next door to Mac and Kelly Radner (Seth Rogen & Rose Byrne), who look to an old enemy (Zac Efron) for help.  The sorority cast looks awesome and Rogen, Byrne, and Efron were perfect in the first one and look to repeat.  Hopefully this movie takes everything that was good about the original and elevates it to the comedy classic it could be.

2 – Sausage Party  (Greg Tiernan & Conrad Vernon, August 12)

Get ready for the raunchiest animated movie since Team America: World Police (2004).  Sausage Party is about a sausage (voiced by Seth Rogen) who realizes being purchased by humans isn’t what he expected and tries to find new meaning in life.  Ridiculous?  Absolutely.  Hilarious?  You bet.  The trailer is incredible and the voice cast is amazing, with Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, James Franco, Paul Rudd, Edward Norton, and Selma Hayek to name a few.  This played like gangbusters at SXSW this year and I cannot wait to finally see it.

1 – The Nice Guys (Shane Black, May 20)

For some reason, IMDb doesn’t have The Nice Guys classified as a comedy.  Have they not watched any of the trailers?  This movie looks absolutely hilarious, and if you’re familiar with Shane Black’s last neo-noir comedy, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), you know exactly what you’re in for.  Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe look to be at their comedic best as two private eyes trying to find a missing girl.  The movie looks smart, funny, bloody, and twisty.  This is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer and of 2016 the comedy I am most excited about this summer.
